Flavia Messina

Project 6

Early Stage Researchers

Hi! My name is Flavia and I am Italian.

I got my Bachelor’s degree in Biology and my Master’s degree in Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. During that period, I did a 3 years internship working on Cell Death and Autophagy and then I spent a year working at the Trinity College University of Dublin to keep studying these pathways.

Currently, I am working for Professor Breandán Kennedy in UCD, Dublin. My ORBITAL project is focused on the characterization of new neuroprotectants that slow down retina degeneration through the block of apoptosis. My goal is to understand the molecular mechanism of these drugs and whether an alteration of autophagy might have a role in blindness. Furthermore, I am going to generate a nanoparticle system to deliver the drugs directly to the posterior part of the eye overcoming the presence of the blood retinal barrier.

In my free time I love to travel and to practice sports, such as surfing, windsurfing and swimming. The sea is my second home and I love the feeling of freedom it gives me.

I am glad to be part of this wonderful network… I cannot wait to start this adventure and to meet new people along this journey!
